Yttrium-90 radioembolization as a palliative treatment for liver tumors: a case study.

چکیده
The best chance of cure for patients with liver cancer is surgical removal, but many tumors are too large or invasive. In addition, chemotherapy is frequently unsuccessful in this patient population. A case study is featured involving a patient determined to be a candidate for Yttrium-90 radioembolization, a minimally invasive liver-directed treatment used to target primary and metastatic liver tumors by delivering radioactive microspheres directly to the tumor. This article provides an introduction to the procedure, as well as practical information for nurses caring for patients with liver cancer following Yttrium-90 radioembolization.AT A GLANCE: Yttrium-90 radioembolization allows larger radiation doses to be used without affecting healthy tissues. An outpatient procedure, Yttrium-90 radioembolization results in fewer side effects than standard treatment. Although Yttrium-90 radioembolization can extend and improve quality of life, its intent is palliative, not curative.

Radioembolization Treatment for Liver Cancer
Although curative treatment is surgery (resection/transplantation) and for small lesions ablative strategies, in primary liver carcinomas such as hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocellular carcinoma, palliative treatment is used for most of these patients because of lack of surgical options. These treatments are regional treatments such as transarterial chemoembolization, radiofrequency abl...
متن کاملLong-Term Palliative Effect of Stenting in Gastric Outlet Obstruction Due to Transarterial Chemoembolization with Yttrium-90 in a Patient with Metastatic Neuroendocrine Tumor
Internal radioembolization with yttrium-90 is a promising treatment method, predominantly for liver tumors. However, the shifting of yttrium-90-loaded spherules into the arteries and veins that supply the duodenum and stomach, leading to ulceration, hemorrhage, perforation, and outlet obstruction of these organs, is one of the major undesirable consequences of this technique. We report a case o...
متن کاملTrans-arterial (90)yttrium radioembolization for patients with unresectable tumors originating from the biliary tree.
Patients with malignant tumors originating from the biliary tree have a poor prognosis, since only a minority of tumors can be resected and most palliative regimens have shown only limited success. We present two patients with unresectable tumors, who were treated with trans-arterial (90)yttrium radioembolization: a patient with an infiltrating gallbladder carcinoma and a patient with an extens...
متن کاملRadioembolization in the Treatment of Neuroendocrine Tumor Metastases to the Liver
Surgical excision remains the preferred treatment for resectable hepatic metastases of neuroendocrine tumors. In cases of more disseminated hepatic disease, transarterial radioembolization with Yttrium-90- (90Y-) labeled microspheres has been demonstrated as a viable option for symptom and locoregional tumor control. On an outpatient basis, radioembolization can be utilized from early line to s...
متن کاملCase Report of Cirrhosis following Yttrium-90 Radioembolization for Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Liver Metastases
BACKGROUND Management options for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) metastatic to the liver include surgical, ablative, cytotoxic, and radioisotope approaches. One potential local treatment option includes selective internal radiotherapy utilizing yttrium-90 ((90)Y) microspheres. (90)Y has also been used in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma and tumors metastatic to the liver. It ...
